Hunger

A short night out on the town for the average vampire.
Standing on an empty street in Chicago, the windy city. True to its name the wind rustled through my hair but I felt no cold on my body. I was always cold. I looked up, past the tall skyscrapers, into the moonless night. I could spot a few stars but that was only because of my heightened vision. Other than that, tonight was dark. Perfect. I forced my lungs to take in the air around me. Still nothing stood out to me. I imagined my stomach growling at me. I needed to eat, now.

Hood over my head and hands in my pockets, I walked away from the street and through an alley leading to another empty street. Still no one was around. I couldn't remember this ever being so hard.

Time to look around. I closed my eyes and counted to three. With a swift push of energy, I jumped up. Currently on the roof of a nearby building, I looked down, searching for anyone. I smiled when I saw her. She was a blonde in a cocktail dress. Alone with high heels in her hands and tears in her eyes, she was perfect.

Three seconds later, I'm on the sidewalk a ways behind her. Walking slow. Following her for a few minutes, I realize she is lost and doesn't know where to go. Her phone rings. She jumps at the sound. I smile bigger. This will be fun. She fumbles through her purse trying to find her phone, dropping things to the ground in her search. I'm there in a second picking up the pieces on the ground, helping.

"Hello," she says to the person through the phone. I hand her the things she dropped. "Thank you," she mouths at me before shouting, "Oh really? Just... shut up. Go to hell," at the phone. She hangs up fast and drops her phone back into her purse.

I pull my hood off so she can see my face, "Are you okay hun?" I ask her. Her eyes get wide with one look at my face and she nods, trying to walk away from me. I smile big, showing her my fangs. "Here, let me help."

Before she can scream, I leap. She's in my arms, we're on a roof. She looks at me with her dark blue eyes and whispers "Please, make it fast."

I pause, usually people beg for life. I'm so close, I can feel her heartbeat through my body. I push away the guilt and sink my teeth into her throat. She gasps out loud. I have no time to feel bad for this one human. Her warm blood slides down my throat. I can feel the warmth in my stomach, like fire. This is my favorite part. With my eyes closed I keep drinking until there is nothing left. I let her dead body drop to the roof floor.

Her blood still on my lips, her taste still on my tongue. I wonder what would have happened to her if I didn't kill her. I erase my thoughts and creep into an empty mind. This is why I wanted to be a vampire. I didn't want to think. I didn't want to feel. With one last look at the blonde, I jumped. Leaving her alone forever.
