Only Friends

Betrayal.
I thought I was happy
Till curiosity
Caused me to lift up
A pile of desk papers.

At the time,
I was thinking
Of how three years
Together
Passed so quickly…
And how I wanted to
Introduce you
To my family
When we finally
Traveled back to
The States.

My fingertips found
A greeting card
(One not from me)
Plastered with
Kisses and
Flirtatious handwriting,
And I stared at it...
My body numb...
Eyes not believing...
Mind past understanding...
Heart futilely hoping
I was wrong...
Till my common sense harshly
Slapped them all
Into
Arctic awakening.

Like a cat struck by lightening
My body went spastic
As you entered the room,
A surprised look on your face.
You gazed at my hands…
And
It was the lie
From your lips
That hurt the most.

"She's only a friend!"
Your voice rang out
In total harmony with
The slamming door
Which I fervently hoped
Hit your face...

Hard.
