Perfection in Class Preparation

1. A Faculty should start preparing for a subject 6 months in advance before actual teaching. Though it is mandatory for a fresher, still it is valid for the experienced Faculty Members as the world is changing faster making old theories obsolete. To Infuse right thing a Faculty member should start visualizing the changes, he wants to incorporate with changing need of time. This may not be relevant for all the technical subjects but quite essential for the management subjects. Old theories are getting obsolete with time should think, read, analyze, solve, review and verify from experts to be up to date.
2. A fresher should go through the course content at least three times before facing the students in class room teaching.
3. Reason for reading entire text to understand the inter linkages between different topics given in a particular subject.
4. Faculty should maintain constant pace in covering the course should not spoil initial classes, with perception of covering the course in subsequent classes at rapid pace, it may happen the classes may be hampered due to uncertain leaves, so maintaining a pace is essential.
5. Faculty himself should be punctual, should reach class before 10 minutes to check the accessories and sitting arrangement of students. In Harvard all the Faculty Members follow the above principles.
6. After completion of class, a Faculty Member should write 5 points what did he learn from the class otherwise this points slipped from the mind. One learns many things during the class conduction which are of immense importance for future improvement of the class conduction. Faculty Member in Harvard follows this principle of maintaining learning diaries to note down 5 points after conducting a class. Learning may be in term of method, examples, future research implication, innovative thinking, student management, etc.
7. Practice what you preach means as Faculty should be careful of word and action.
8. Have the principles of zero expectation. Never expect anything in return of your self immolation for the students career. In spite of hard labor, tireless effort and sleepless night many often one does not get expected result, but have patience with time one is going to get the rewards and return. Preparation, effort, labor are in our hands, and looking into result we should keep on changing yourselves but cannot predict the unexpected outcome. The unexpected outcome should not dishearten in the process of preparation and progress. Never argue with the students, avoid confrontation and conflicts. Faculty needs temperament, a sense of sacrifice and big heart.
9. Should have good listening skill. This is difficult for a faculty as he used to habituate with speaking, guiding and suggesting. But it is important. One should put special effort to gain this ability.
10. Be a teacher where should not only like you, also remember at different phases in deriving solution from your imparted knowledge and guidance.
11. Prepare a write up of the content with own word before taking a class, it may be of 10 pages that can be one’s life time assets as teaching aids. Distribute or mail those prepared handout with exercise or cases among the students for future references or pre-preparation before attending your class.
12. Prepare 30% extra time duration for a class, so that one will not finish the class before time and will get puzzled regarding rest idle time. Means if the class is of 1 hour one should go to class with 1 hr 20 minutes preparation, so that even if some of the point misses from the memory, one can manage 1 hr easily. One can finish the class early, if can present the content effectively in short time satisfying the students expectation and understanding adequately.
13. Faculty should go through several training on particular subject to handle a subject confidently; even seminar, researches and writing are also helpful.

PPT Preparation and Preparation

14. PPT should not be unnecessarily lengthy , ideal PPT should be of 5 to 7 slides and each PPT should carry 5 to 6 lines.
15. Words in the PPT should be simple and should of original means from own idea.
16. PPT are the supporting tools, one should not be dependent on them. Means in technical failure one should capable of managing the class without PPT.
17. PPT should not be too much flashy.
18. We are the teacher not the entertainer, many often through videos, blogs, and flashy PPT entertain the class but miss the objective of teaching for learning.

Handling Case Study

19. A case may be of a few line and may be of 300 pages.
20. A case should be based on certain concept.
21. A Faculty should not give final answers to any case, it should be by the students only, a faculty should act as facilitator to instigate discussion to explore the students’ hidden intellectual ability.
22. There are some of the popular cases which cannot be ignored as the case on South West Airline or Coca Cola.
23. In entire case discussion, the student should participate and should conclude no where Faculty should draw conclusion, otherwise student will be waiting the faculty member’s answer for the solution of problems in case.
24. A case may be of 1 page which is known as caselets, or may be full length of 10 to 20 pages or may be a jumbo case may be of 300 pages.
25. Try to involve some corporate people to make the cases more lively and conclusive.
26. Student will show more interest in solving live cases, where solutions can be useful for corporate, so involving corporate is good strategy to make discussion more lively. Example while discussing a Honda case, if Honda people can be called to correlate the student opinion and perception with the real market happening then learning can be immense.

Learning through Earning

27. The importance of "hands on experience" means a person can learn better by carrying out a task through his hands.
28. Before starting of academic session students should be given a chance to understand the reality in the market or in real life scenario. For management education to understand the market, market forces, factors, product, price, Hr policies better a students should visit the market and should learn by doing a job of road side hawkers to sale common things to common man.
29. Through the above approach a student will learn many thing on the product design, pricing, price bargaining, taste and preferences, sales technique, product differentiation, advertising, salesman hardship, salesman training, etc.
30. This principles was also followed in olden days when the prince used to get his education in Convent (Gurukuls) and during their education they need to do variety of task starting from cleaning of clothes, wood cutting, cleaning of utensils, grooming, etc , just to make them realized about the hardship of their subjects and to get rid of ego.
