England Women Out to Poop Host's Party in Finland Quarter-final
England's manager, Hope Powell, is drawing on past experience before facing Finland in the Euro 2009 quarter-final
Finland will have home advantage but England, who have never lost to the Euro 2009 hosts, will be favorites to progress into the semi-finals for the first time since 1995 when the teams meet in Turku tomorrow. Hope Powell's team will step on to the field at the Turku Stadium at 2pm UK time, where on Monday they qualified for the quarter-finals with a 1-1 draw against Sweden, to face the Group A winners in front of a capacity crowd of 8,000, made up almost entirely of Finnish fans.
That is not, however, as daunting a prospect as it seems, as Powell pointed to a similar situation in Rennes two years ago, where a 1-1 draw took England through to the World Cup finals at the expense of France. "There were 19,000 French fans and we coped very well," Powell said. "At times when we were on top the crowd turned against their own team, and if that happens this time then hopefully it will work in our favor."
The coach accepts that England, who beat Finland 4-1 in February, will be expected to go through, but said: "We'd be foolish to think of past results. It will be a difficult game. Finland are a big side, physically strong, and we have to cope with that. But we are not playing our best football so far, and I think there's more to come."
A semi-final against France or Holland awaits the winners of a game that England may have to contest without the right-back Alex Scott, who has a groin strain.
England probable (4-2-3-1): Brown (Everton); A Scott (Boston Breakers), White (Arsenal), Johnson (Everton), Stoney (Chelsea); Chapman (Arsenal), Williams (Everton); Carney (Chicago Red Stars), K Smith (Boston Breakers), S Smith (Leeds Carnegie); Aluko (St Louis Athletica).
