Bradford Bulls Hopeful Steve Menzies Can Make Quick Return Despite Swine Flu
Despite being prescribed medication for swine flu Bradford Bulls are hopeful Steve Menzies could still play against Harlequins on Sunday
Bradford Bulls say that their former Australian international Steve Menzies could still play against Harlequins on Sunday despite being prescribed medication for swine flu. The 35-year-old is currently in isolation but has already shown signs of improvement after developing symptoms over the weekend.
Menzies became ill while with the Bulls' squad for their away Super League game with Celtic Crusaders, and was ruled out of the match on Saturday morning. He was then placed in a taxi to Maesteg, where Bradford's reserve team had taken on their Crusaders counterparts, and traveled back to Yorkshire with them in order to avoid any possible contamination of Steve McNamara's first team squad.
Since then he has remained away from the club, but has already reported an improvement in his condition after being prescribed with Tamiflu. "Steve wasn't in great shape and our doctor felt he had all the symptoms," McNamara said. "Since coming back he's been given the medication and he'll be off for a few days. Hopefully it'll settle down."
Menzies is the first Super League player to suffer a swine flu scare, though several players in Australia's NRL were placed in quarantine following the first State of Origin match in early June. The Rugby Football League has confirmed that it liased with clubs over measures to stop any potential outbreak spreading, but that they are leaving treatment to the individual medical staffs.
The Bulls, meanwhile, are expected to confirm the release of their former New Zealand international David Solomona before the end of the week. Solomona has not played since seriously damaging his shoulder at St Helens in April.
