Max Mosley Meets F1 Teams Ahead of Decision on 2010 Championship Entry

A secret meeting between Max Mosley and Fota members aimed to smooth over the ongoing budget cap dispute
Max Mosley, the FIA president, met the eight members of the Formula One Teams Association today in an attempt to head off a major split in the sport ahead of tomorrow morning's publication of the entry list for the 2010 world championship. The central London location of the meeting was kept a closely guarded secret and the FIA firmly refused to offer any comment as to the progress of the meeting.

However, it is hoped that sufficient common ground was achieved to ensure that the established teams will be able to compete next year – rather than only a group of smaller organizations who lodged their entries in the confident anticipation of a £40m cost cap on budgets being introduced from the start of 2010.

Yesterday Mosley invited all the Fota teams to enter the world championship unconditionally to be in a position to discuss and, if necessary, amend the 2010 technical regulations. In a letter from Mosley to the Ferrari president, Luca di Montezemolo, which has been leaked, it became clear that the FIA felt there was sufficient room for manoeuvre to resolve the apparent impasse and that formed the basis of today's meeting.

"We can agree that all the teams run under the same rules in 2010," wrote Mosley. "These would be as published, but with the technical and sporting advantages offered to the cost-capped teams deleted. Instead of these advantages we will facilitate know-how transfer between certain current teams and new entrants at least for 2010 and possibly for 2011." However Mosley was not prepared to back down on the principle of cost-cutting.
