Russia Urges Global Help for Ukraine to Help Pay Gas Bill
International community urged to bail out Ukraine amid fears of another gas war
Russia has urged the international community to bail out Ukraine and help it pay its gas bill amid growing fears that another gas war could disrupt supplies to the EU. Ukraine has been severely battered by the economic crisis. It has been unable to pay its gas bill to Russia for the last month. Additionally, Kiev has not been able to stump up the $4.8bn (£2.9bn) needed to stockpile gas for next winter. The gas is vital if Ukraine is to deliver gas to the EU, and avoid a repeat of January's damaging standoff with Moscow in which supplies to Ukraine and Europe beyond were cut. Luke Harding Moscow
