Michael Vaughan's Ashes Hopes in Doubt As He Suffers Knee Injury
Michael Vaughan's hopes of taking part in this summer's Ashes could be in doubt after he injured his knee while playing football
An ill-advised football kick about before Yorkshire's championship encounter with Worcestershire at Headingley has left Michael Vaughan with a knee injury. Three years ago, it was an injury to the same knee that almost ended his career.
Vaughan was under no challenge when he seemed to twist his right knee, which has needed four operations, and he immediately hobbled back to the dressing room for treatment. He did not field all day and was replaced by Ben Sanderson.
Yorkshire admitted that Vaughan is "doubtful'' for the Friends Provident Trophy match against Gloucestershire at Headingley , but their director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, insisted that there seemed to be no serious damage.
"There doesn't look to be any structural damage and we will just have to wait and see how he is for Sunday,'' Moxon said. "It was an innocuous injury. He just twisted his knee. It was just one of those things.''
Nevertheless, Vaughan will surely be bemoaning his decision to join a football warm-up, especially considering that it took place on a Headingley outfield that was damp after rain and has yet to bed in fully after drainage work that meant the turf was laid only a month ago.
It completes a dismaying start to the season for Vaughan, who is trying to revive his England career after resigning from the captaincy last summer. He has failed to make a first-class fifty in four attempts and as a result missed out on selection for the first Test squad of the summer, against West Indies at Lord's next week. Any prolonged absence would drastically reduce his chances of gaining selection in time for the Ashes series.
