James Anderson Makes It a Happy Return to Sussex for Peter Moores
Lancashire coach Peter Moores enjoyed an emphatic win over former county Sussex after James Anderson posted career-best bowling figuresPeter Moores's face was creased in a pitch-wide smile on the players' balcony yesterday as he marked his return to the ground where he made his name to lead his new club to an emphatic eight-wicket win over Sussex in which James Anderson posted career-best bowling figures.
"It was a great win and a great game of cricket, a hard game of cricket and I feel very pleased," said Lancashire's coach. "We lost two early wickets chasing a small total and we could have got a bit twitchy out there but we held our nerve."
Lancashire will now lose Anderson to England and Sajid Mahmood to the Lions, but Anderson, in what could be his only championship match of the season, made a telling contribution.
Yesterday he dismissed the three men capable of holding up Lancashire – Luke Wright, Tom Smith and Robin Martin-Jenkins – to finish with figures of five for 53 in the innings and a match analysis of 51-15-109-11, which beat his previous best return of 10 for 81 against Worcestershire in 2004.
When Gary Keedy took the wickets of Ragheb Aga and Corey Collymore in four deliveries, to give him five for 45 in the innings, Sussex were all out for 167 and Lancashire needed 158 for victory.
Collymore struck twice to dismiss Paul Horton and Tom Smith to leave Lancashire 12 for two in the 11th over. But Ashwell Prince, with his second impressive innings of the match, scored an unbeaten 91 to ensure Lancashire's second win on this ground in as many seasons. He hit 11 fours and a six in his 117-ball innings and was helped over the line by fellow South African Francois du Plessis, who was unbeaten on 58.Moores said afterwards: "Jimmy has been bowling great for 12-18 months and he just slipped back into the rhythm in this match. He has matured both as a cricketer and a bloke. He's in his mid-late 20s and it's a good age."
