Defeat Dashes Gb Women's Hopes of 2012 Games Berth
Great Britain's women were defeated 71-66 by Romania, all but ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics
Great Britain's women had their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics, via Europe's Division A, all but ended last night when they lost 71-66 to Romania in Targoviste and were relegated. Kim Butler took 10 rebounds with her 22 points and Rosalee Mason added 16 points as GB hit back from a 15-point second-quarter deficit to close to three points of the home side late on, but were denied the win that would have saved them and relegated Finland. The team will now spend two crucial years in Division B, giving them no chance to prove to the world governing body Fiba that they are deserving of a 2012 hosts' place, which is not automatic in Games basketball.
