Scolari Says Win Over United is Vital
The Chelsea manager says his team will be looking for a victory when they visit Old Trafford this weekend
Chelsea's manager, Luiz Felipe Scolari, has admitted a victory over Manchester United on Sunday is vital for his team's Premier League title challenge.
"We need to win because they are four points behind us and have two games in hand," said Scolari. "Those two games are not against us. It is not in our hands and we need to think about winning this game.
"If we win, we are in front of Manchester United and we have 18 games to play. If you lose one game or three points against a direct opponent like United, you are in trouble. But all the games are a test for our players, we need to win all the games."
Chelsea have endured a series of poor performances at home, culminating in last week's 1-1 draw with League One side Southend in the FA Cup, but Scolari is confident his side can continue their encouraging away form.
"It is the perfect game to lift them all," said Scolari. "It is a fantastic game. I think half of the world will be watching this game. I have lost many games with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but we have done well away from home.
"Sometimes when you play at home it is more difficult than playing away. Maybe now it is more difficult at Stamford Bridge than away from home."
John Terry will return to the Chelsea side after missing three games through suspension and Scolari was quick to highlight his captain's importance to the side.
"It is important for us that John is back because he is our captain and a man who has a good position on the pitch," said Scolari. "He is a leader and plays very well every game. I think on Sunday the opposing players will respect him as well. I have five central defenders in very good condition and this is very good for me."
Scolari also turned his attention to affairs off-the-field, confirming he is unwilling to sell Joe Cole to Tottenham, despite the midfielder's growing frustration at his inability to secure a first-team start.
"Yes, he will [be staying at Chelsea in the long term]," said Scolari, when asked about Cole's future. "He is a fantastic player and important for the club and for me."
