A British soldier has been killed by enemy fire in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of defense said today.

The soldier, from 2nd Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, was killed yesterday in the Musa Qala area when a patrol came under attack.

Brigadier General Richard Blanchette said: "Our deepest sympathies are with the soldier's family and friends as they deal with their loss. This soldier died honorably, helping bring security to Afghanistan."
