Children Buried As Stairs Collapse at Russian School

One killed and eight missing under rubble after maintenance work undermines staircase
One child has been killed and eight remained buried under debris at a Russian school when a staircase collapsed, the country's government said today.

Another 10 children were in hospital after the collapse in the town of Belyayevka, in the south-eastern Urals region of Orenburg, Russia's emergency services ministry said.

A ministry spokesman said: "As a result of maintenance works in one of the schools in Orenburg region the staircase between the second and third floor collapsed. One child died, 10 are in hospital, and eight are under the rubble."

Many Russian schools are in poor condition after decades of neglect, though the Kremlin has pledged to renovate the worst of them.
