Ryder Cup: Americans Dominate in Morning Foursomes
America's campaign got off to a great start as they took the lead after the morning foursomes
America's campaign got off to a great start as they took a 3-1 lead after the morning foursomes. It was the first time since 1991 that Europe have found themselves behind after the opening morning.
Justin Leonard and Hunter Mahan drew first blood as they recovered from two down after two holes to beat Europe's Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey 3&2. It was Leonard's first victory in nine matches, coming on his first appearance since his part in the controversial victory at Brookline in 1999. "It feels great," said Leonard. "I told Hunter I lost the first two holes for us on purpose to take the pressure off. We had a lot of fun out there."
Phil Mickleson and Anthony Kim also staged a stirring comeback: in their case from three down with six to play to level their match with Padraig Harrington and Robert Karlsson.
Elsewhere, Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell beat Justin Rose and Ian Poulter by one hole, while Kenny Perry and Jim Furyk lost the last two holes to halve their match with Lee Westwood and Sergio Garcia.
