Chelsea Appoint Wilkins

Ray Wilkins has replaced the departed Steve Clarke as Chelsea's assistant first-team coach
Chelsea have appointed Ray Wilkins as the club's new assistant first-team coach following the departure of Steve Clarke to West Ham.

Wilkins, who made nearly 200 appearances for Chelsea in the 1970s, embarks on his second coaching spell with the club, having previously worked under former manager Gianluca Vialli.

The 52 year-old will be in charge alongside Luiz Filipe Scolari in time for Chelsea's crucial home clash with Manchester United on Sunday. Wilkins' second stint at Stamford Bridge marks a return to the game after he lost his coaching position with the England Under-21 side last year following Stuart Pearce's appointment as head coach.

Wilkins became Chelsea's youngest captain at the age of 18 and was twice named the club's player of the year before moving on to Manchester United in 1979. He later played for clubs including AC Milan, Rangers and QPR, and won 84 England caps, before managing QPR and Fulham.

While working with Vialli, Wilkins helped Chelsea to win the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 2000.
