King Piles on the Misery for Newcastle Owner Ashley
Premier League round-up: Marlon King scored twice as Hull beat Newcastle at a far from full St James' Park
Marlon King piled on the misery for Newcastle owner Mike Ashley this afternoon, scoring both goals as Hull beat the Magpies 2-1 at St James' Park. Newcastle's supporters – angry over the departure of manager Kevin Keegan - had protested against Ashley's continued ownership of the club before kick-off, and their sense of frustration was heightened by seeing their side outplayed by a side many considered to be relegation fodder when the season began.
King opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 34th minute after Peter Halmosi was brought down by Nicky Butt. Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given got a hand to King's effort on that occasion, but had no chance of keeping out his second 10 minutes into the second half, as King cut across a wrong-footed Charles N'Zogbia and rifled a left-footed effort into the far corner.
Xisco gave Newcastle hope by jabbing home a debut goal with eight minutes remaining, but they were unable to find a second. Instead Danny Guthrie was sent off for lashing out at Craig Fagan as he tried to play out time down by the corner flag. The win was Hull's second win of the season, following victory over Fulham on the opening weekend, but fellow Premier League new boys West Brom were celebrating their first after beating West Ham 3-2 at the Hawthorns. After taking an early lead through James Morrison, West Brom were pegged back by Mark Noble and Lucas Neill strikes, only to equalize through a Roman Bednar penalty before half-time. Chris Brunt then secured all three points with a sharp turn and finish seven minutes from time.
Emmanuel Adebayor, meanwhile, scored a hat-trick as Arsenal beat Blackburn 4-0 at Ewood Park. Robin van Persie had opened the scoring for Arsenal after eight minutes.
Elsewhere, Wigan drew 1-1 with Sunderland after Amr Zaki canceled out Titus Bramble's own goal, while Fulham secured their third league win on the bounce by beating Bolton 2-1. Zoltan Gera and Bobby Zamora had given Fulham a two-goal lead at half-time, but Kevin Davies struck with eight minutes remaining to ensure an anxious finish for the hosts. Portsmouth beat Middlesbrough by the same margin at Fratton Park, Jermain Defoe scoring a brace after Mido had given Boro a first-half lead.
