Liverpool Finally Land Riera From Espanyol
Liverpool have completed the signing of Spanish winger Albert Riera from Espanyol on a four-year deal
Liverpool have signed Spain winger Albert Riera from La Liga side Espanyol for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Anfield after choosing Rafael Benitez's side over a host of other clubs including neighbors Everton. Riera, who has been given the number 11 shirt at Anfield, has previously played in the Barclays Premier League in the 2005-06 season when he was on loan at Manchester City.
Meanwhile full-back Steve Finnan has headed in the opposite direction, signing for Espanyol on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 32-year-old defender, who signed from Fulham for £3.5m in 2003, was an ever-present for Rafael Benitez's first two seasons in charge at Anfield but has since lost his place to Alvaro Arbeloa and summer signing Philipp Degen. Finnan will provide defensive cover for the Spanish side after they sold Pablo Zabaleta to Manchester City.
Striker Andriy Voronin has agreed a one-year loan deal with Hertha Berlin. The Ukrainian international moved to Merseyside on a free transfer 12 months ago, but failed to establish himself ahead of Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt in Benitez's attacking line-up. Voronin scored six goals in his 27 appearances for the club but will now return to the Bundesliga, having previously played for Bayer Leverkusena and Cologne.
Liverpool have bolstered their reserve squad with two new signings. Brazilian teenager Vitor Flora has joined on a free transfer. The 18-year-old striker holds an Italian passport and last season played for Botafogo FC. Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has joined the club on a permanent deal after spending the last 12 months on loan at Melwood. Gulacsi has signed a contract until 2010.
