Valverde Leaves It Late to Take the Gold Jersey
Alejandro Valverde took an overall lead in the Tour de Spain after winning the 176km second stage
Spain's Alejandro Valverde won the 176km second stage of the Tour of Spain from Granada to Jaen yesterday to take the overall lead. The Italian Davide Rebellin was second, with his compatriot Alessandro Ballan third.
The stage had an uphill finish and there was a bunch sprint after the last of the breakaways was caught with 4km to go. Greg Avermaet of Belgium and the gold jersey wearer Filippo Pozzato of Italy made up the top five. Elsewhere, Ben Swift, took his third major win of the season in the Tour of Aosta in Italy, making it likely he will lead the national Under-23 team in the world road race championships at the end of this month.
