Olympics: Davies Takes Silver in 10k Swim
David Davies won another swimming medal for Britain this morning in the 10km marathon, producing an excellent performance to take silver, having been overhauled by Maarten van der Weijden of the Netherland only in the final stages of the race.
The Welshman led for long spells of the race, and looked set for gold as he kicked for home in the closing stages, but the Dutchman found the extra energy to move into the lead at the last and snatch the gold. Thomas Lurz of Germany took the bronze.
An exhausted Davies needed treatment from paramedics after a grueling swim. "For the last part of it I was delirious, I wanted it so bad," he said. "I've given it everything - the stretcher at the end was a bit mad but I've got something to show for it. I felt a bit violated to be honest, people swimming all over me, and the last lap was a real struggle."
But his medal adds to the silver and bronze medals won in the same event by British women Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten yesterday.
