Olympics: Reade Eyes Multiple Medals at London 2012
Shanaze Reade is likely to go for gold on the BMX track and the velodrome in London
The world BMX and track cycling champion Shanaze Reade is likely to travel to the European under-23 track cycling championships on September 2, less than two weeks after her campaign to be the first Olympic champion in BMX. The word from the GB cycling team is that she has her sights on a bid to take medals in more than one discipline in London in 2012.
The 19-year-old from Crewe has said several times – as recently as last Monday – that she would like to take on Britain's sprint queen Victoria Pendleton, crowned Olympic champion on Tuesday. As part of the learning process, she may race the keirin and sprint in the meeting at Pruskov in Poland.
"Shanaze wants to go to see if she can develop herself into a track sprinter with a view of maybe going to London and competing on the track as well as the BMX," said the Great Britain performance director Dave Brailsford yesterday. Reade has won the team sprint on the track – teamed up with Pendleton – for the last two years.
Asked if he was surprised at Reade's ambitions, Brailsford said they were understandable given the achievements of cyclists like Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins at this Games. "She's young, cyclists like her come into cycling and think about where they are going next.
"She's made it in BMX - what does the future hold for her which is exceptional? It's to win the BMX gold medal in London, which would be a great feat, but for her to win other gold medals – to be a multi-medalist, which let's face it is the way things are going – then she needs to hone her skills in other events."
