Olympics: Gold Again for Gb As Goodison Triumphs in Laser Class
Paul Goodison has won the Laser class in Qingdao to a third sailing gold to the British haul
Paul Goodison played a canny game in his Laser this morning to hold off the challenge of Sweden's Rasmus Myrgren and win a third sailing gold for Great Britain.
Goodison stayed near the back of the field from the start but, crucially, kept Myrgren well behind him, to guarantee gold. The Briton's greatest worry appeared to be the placid conditions in Qingdao as, on another calm day on the water, the organizers could have called for the race to be rerun if the wind had completely died.
But the wind held up and Goodison held on to claim Great Britain's 13th gold, and third in the sailing, following the successes of Ben Ainslie in the Finn class and Sarah Webb, Pippa Wilson and Sarah Ayton in the Yngling.
