Olympics: Price Pounds European Champion Timurziev
British super-heavyweight David Price is through to the quarter-finals after stopping Islam Timurziev in the second round
David Price, the captain of Britain's boxing team, is through to the quarter-finals of the super-heavyweight tournament after stopping European champion and heavy favorite Islam Timurziev in the second round.
Timurziev, the pre-tournament favorite, had started the brighter, leading 2-0 on points after the first of what were scheduled to be four rounds, but Price's vicious left-right combination in the second round left the Russian on one knee.
The fight resumed after a standing count, but Timurziev was on the canvas again moments later after walking onto another powerful left and, following a second standing count, the referee called the bout in Price's favor. "I just caught him with a good punch," said Price afterwards. "That's boxing."
