Beijing 2008: Race to Remove Algae From Olympic Venue
More than 10,000 workers are battling to remove thick algal bloom covering waters around the Olympic sailing venue of Qingdao in east China. Officials warned it would take two weeks to clear the growth, which competitors, including members of the British sailing team, say is hampering training. It has blocked practice routes and covered almost a third of the competition zone. Some 5,000 square miles is affected, the state news agency Xinhua reported.
A thousand fishing boats are dredging the area and have removed 100,000 tonnes of the lurid, blue-green algae bloom.
