Tainio Completes Switch From Tottenham to Sunderland
Transfer round-up: West Ham swoop for Behrami | Liverpool snap up Spanish teenager
Sunderland have announced the signing of Tottenham midfielder Teemu Tainio. The Finnish international has agreed a three-year contract with Roy Keane's side. Keane is also hoping to lure Spurs trio Steed Malbranque, Younes Kaboul and Pascal Chimbonda to the Stadium of Light.
West Ham have signed the Swiss international utility player Valon Behrami from Lazio for £5m. Behrami, who can play at right-back or across midfield, has agreed a five-year contract. He joined Lazio in 2005 and made 69 appearances for the Serie A club, scoring four goals, and represented Switzerland at the 2006 World Cup and this summer's European Championship.
"I am very happy to at last be able to sign for West Ham," said Behrami, who was born in Kosovo but moved to Switzerland as a child. "For me it is a dream come true to play for the club and in the Premier League. I am very much looking forward to becoming part of the team here.
"After the European Championships, I spoke with West Ham who expressed their interest in me coming here. It was important for me to talk with everyone here and, when I did, I was very pleased to see what they wanted from me and what the plans are now and in the future for the team. It was something that enabled me to make my decision very quickly and now I can't wait to train and play for West Ham."
West Ham's chief executive, Scott Duxbury, said the club were delighted to have secured 23-year-old Behrami. "We beat off a lot of interest from other clubs to get him and we are very pleased to now have him here at West Ham United," said Duxbury. "He is a player who will be a valuable addition to the squad as we aim for a successful season ahead."
Liverpool also continued their summer signing spree, securing a deal with the Spanish third division side Murcia Deportivo for the teenage right-back Emmanuel Mendy. The 18-year-old, who has also played on the left, arrives on a free transfer and is described by the club as "petit but powerful". He is expected to compete for a place in the reserve side, managed by the former Liverpool defender Gary Ablett.
Meanwhile the Turkey captain Emre Belozoglu has signed for Fenerbahçe from Newcastle United in a four-year deal, the Turkish club announced today. The 27-year-old captained the national side in their first game at Euro 2008 but suffered a thigh injury that kept him out of their run to the semi-finals. The injury also threatened the move to Fenerbahçe, which was first reported at the end of May, and the transfer was further complicated by the need to complete 21 days of military service on return to his home country.
Emre appeared at a press conference in Istanbul today where the club announced the completion of the transfer. "I have been playing in Europe for so many years, and now it is time for me to come back to my country to lead Fenerbahce to greater victories," Emre said. "I'm so happy to be here right now. While playing for Newcastle, Fenerbahce also wanted to sign me, but it was not the right time for me to leave Europe. Today, I feel I am in the right place at the right time."
Emre started his career with Fenerbahçe's Istanbul rivals Galatasaray, before a four-year spell at Inter Milan. He joined Newcastle for £3.8m in 2005 and made 58 appearances for the club.
Wigan Athletic have had a bid for Middlesbrough's Lee Cattermole accepted. The midfielder has been given permission to talk to Wigan and undergo a medical after the clubs agreed an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £3.5m. Middlesbrough do not expect any deal to be completed until next week.
Earlier today, Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate told the club's official website: "It's not agreed, but it's pretty close to what we are looking for... something could happen in the next 24 hours."
Cattermole is a product of the club's youth academy and was given his first chance under previous boss Steve McClaren. He spent most of last season on the bench under strong competition in central midfield from Julio Arca, Fabio Rochemback and George Boateng and his prospects at Boro were not improved by the arrival of Didier Digard and Marvin Emnes this summer.
