Collingwood Fall Guy Again
Yorkshire Durham
184 59-3
Both England captains failed with the bat yesterday. Michael Vaughan's Test place is secure but the top-edged heave at Adil Rashid which dismissed Paul Collingwood was an act of a desperate man.
Dale Benkenstein's decision to put Yorkshire in appeared to give Vaughan the chance of a first-hand assessment of Steve Harmison's form. But all 18 balls he faced were delivered by Callum Thorp. Vaughan failed to score off the first 17 and a prod at the last gave Phil Mustard a simple catch. The home crowd were unimpressed, as they had been with the news that Vaughan and the England and Wales Cricket Board had decided he should not play in the Friends Provident Trophy semi-final against Essex on Saturday. Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara will play - for Essex.
Jacques Rudolph looked comfortable until he pushed at a Liam Plunkett delivery which bounced more than he expected. Anthony McGrath and Adam Lyth took the score past 50 before McGrath was trapped by Plunkett. The loss of the afternoon to rain did not drive the crowd away and they were rewarded by an extended final session in which 11 wickets fell.
Lyth and Andrew Gale added 50 before Gale was given leg-before to Plunkett. Lyth edged Thorp to slip and Gerard Brophy's dismissal triggered a run of four wickets for four runs in 11 balls. Three went to Collingwood. The last was Matthew Hoggard but he struck back, dismissing Michael Di Venuto leg-before. Will Smith edged Tim Bresnan to slip and Collingwood's flail put his side on the back foot.
