Iraqi Suicide Bomber Kills 12 at Meeting of Sheiks

Attack on government meeting is third in one week in or near Baghdad
At least 12 people were killed in Iraq today after a suicide bomber detonated an explosive belt during a meeting of tribal sheiks near Baghdad.

Police said the town's administrator and some sheiks died in the blast in the town of Karmah, 30 miles west of Baghdad.

The bomber is thought to have entered the building through a back door to avoid security.

It was the third attack this week against municipal government meetings. Two Americans were killed and four were wounded in Salman Pak, near Baghdad, and ten people, including four Americans, were killed in the capital's Sadr City.

Although violence in Iraq is at its lowest level in more than four years, according to the US military, Sunni and Shia extremists are continuing to undermine security gains.
