British Soldier Killed During Fight With Taliban

A British soldier was killed today during a fight with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The soldier, from the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, was shot during operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan that has seen heavy fighting.

An MoD spokesman said the soldier was fatally wounded during the operation.

The death brings to 107 the number of British troops killed since 2001. Ten British soldiers have died in the past two weeks, including the first female British soldier to be killed, because of an increase in attacks on foreign troops by the Taliban.

The soldier's next of kin have been informed.
