Baghdad Car Bomb Death Toll Rises to 63

Explosion at market in Shia neighborhood was deadliest in Iraqi capital for three months
The death toll from a devastating car bomb explosion in Baghdad yesterday has risen to 63, Iraqi police said today.

Four children and five women were among those killed by the blast, which US forces blamed on rogue Shia militia.

Another 75 people were injured when the explosion happened near a crowded market in the predominantly Shia neighborhood of al-Hurriya, in the north-west of the city.

The bombing was the deadliest in the Iraqi capital for three months.

Lieutenant Colonel Steve Stover, a US forces spokesman, blamed the attack on a "special groups" cell – a term for Shia militants believed to be backed by Iran.

Stover said the attack was intended to incite violence between Shias and Sunnis.
