Confident Murray Into Third Round
Andy Murray made light work of his second-round opponent Jose Acasuso in the French Open, beating him in three sets
Andy Murray found his best form to defeat Argentina's Jose Acasuso in straight sets to advance into the third round of the French Open.
Murray, the 10th seed in the tournament, made a confident start, winning the first set 6-4. The British number one broke his opponent's serve in the first game of the match, courtesy of one fine drop shot and a winning lob.
Acasuso began to demonstrate why he is considered a danger on the surface with a fine array of powerful ground strokes and Murray was forced to save three break points on his serve in the sixth game.
But Murray, with his big forehand working well, appeared in solid and controlled form too and was good value for his lead on a day of tricky wind conditions at Roland Garros.
The second set started in similar fashion to the first with Murray breaking Acasuso's serve, assisted by one precision lob which landed on the baseline.Acasuso, who had not won back-to-back matches on clay all season, slammed his racket down on the court in frustration but he was being outplayed by the number 10 seed. Two double faults by the Argentinian in the third game gifted Murray another break.
It was Murray's sureness of touch which was earning him easy points and he broke Acasuso's serve for the third time in the set with a rasping forehand return and then served out to take the set 6-0 to take control of the match at two sets to love.
Acasuso rallied in the third set but the gulf in class was still obvious. The crucial break came in the seventh game, the superior Murray composure earning him three break points, which he converted with a gift when Acasuso double faulted.
The Murray forehands, if anything, were gaining in power and he completed a 6-4 6-0 6-4 victory to earn a third round match against Spain's Nicolas Almagro.
