The 1980’s were a time that witnessed quite a few important changes. This was the time for some outlandish fashion ideas and weird hairstyles! There were various other social trends that found a rise during the 1980’s. Here’s a list of some important events of the 1980’s that have had significance in various fields. This 1980’s timeline is all about many such important events way back then.
1980’s Timeline: Important Events of the 1980’s
1980: This was the year that saw the first festival of rock music begin in the Soviet Union.
This was also the time when Ronald Reagan became the 40th President of the United States.
In March 1980, the existence of Janus (moon of Saturn) was proven due to the Voyager 1 probe.
Mount St. Helens erupted on May 18 the same year. This caused severe loss of life and also damage.
1981: This was the year when Lady Diana Spencer married Charles-Prince of Wales in the month of July.
Music Television (MTV) was launched in August later this year on cable television.
1982: This was the year when President Ronald Reagan became the first American chief executive who addressed a joint session on June 8 of the British Parliament.
This year also marks the birth of Prince William at St Mary’s hospital, Paddington, West London on June 21.
1983: This year was proclaimed as the ‘The Year of the Bible’, by U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
The very stylish and uber cool brand; Swatch, introduced their first set of watches in the month of March.
1984: This year, India launched Operation Meghdoot. This name was given to the attack planned to capture the Siachen Glacier in Kashmir; this region was under dispute then. Operation Meghdoot was launched in April.
In the month of August, the Space Shuttle Discovery took off on its maiden voyage.
1985: The hit single. ‘We Are The World ‘ was recorded on 28th January in USA for Africa.
In the month of February, Nelson Mandela refused the offer for freedom, which was given by the South African Government.
1986: The painting ‘Weeping Woman’ by Picasso was found two weeks after it was stolen on August 19. This painting was kept in a locker located at Spencer Street Station in Melbourne, Australia.
On March 8th this year, the Japanese spacecraft Suisei passed in close proximity to Halley’s comet, and studied the UV hydrogen corona as well as the solar wind.
1987: In the month of February, the United States military detonated an atomic weapon. This was at the Nevada Test Site.
In the month of July, the single European Act was passed by the European Union.
1988: In the month of April, ‘The Last Emperor’ won a total of 9 Oscars!
In the month of December, Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Pakistan. It was in this year, she also became the first woman to head the government.
1989: On January 20, George H.W. Bush succeeded Ronald Reagan to be the 41st President of the United States.
This year, in the month of May, the Disney-MGM studio opened for the public for the very first time.
