Round-up
May 24: Graeme Welch is an old-fashioned cricketer. He enjoys a pint and a fag and a chat about the game with anyone who'll listen - and he had plenty to talk about last night.
Graeme Welch is an old-fashioned cricketer. He enjoys a pint and a fag and a chat about the game with anyone who'll listen at the end of a hard day - and he had plenty to talk about last night.
After Michael di Venuto's heroic 150 the previous day, to drag Derbyshire back into their match at Chester-le-Street, Welch took five wickets as Durham were bowled out for 149 in 66.4 overs. Vince Wells (15) was the only batsman among the last eight to reach double figures.
This set up a thriller. Di Venuto failed this time, but Dominic Cork (48 not out) is playing a captain's innings.
There are more thorns than scented blooms for Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. They lost their last three wickets to Somerset for six runs, with their old boys Nixon McLean and Simon Francis completing their good work of the previous day.
Hampshire followed on and were soon in more trouble. Their best two batsmen, John Crawley (2) and Simon Katich (4), failed again before Robin Smith and Derek Kenway added 89 for the third wicket.
At Edgbaston Martin Saggers cleaned up the Warwickshire innings to finish with five for 62. Michael Carberry responded with another half-century for Kent before Mo Sheikh struck twice.
At Grace Road there was more frustration for Middlesex as Leicestershire inched their way towards parity. The ninth-wicket pair of Jeremy Snape and Dave Brignull brought up the first 50 stand in this bowler-dominated match. Snape (40 not out) is the game's joint leading scorer with Ashley Noffke.
