Aussies to Old Trafford
The ECB announced that Old Trafford will host two Twenty20 internationals between England and Australia next summer
Manchester's image as a one-day cricket city was further underlined yesterday when Old Trafford was awarded two Twenty20 games between England and Australia in the summer of 2009.
The Twenty20 matches, confirmed yesterday when the ECB released the full Ashes schedule, will also be followed by a return visit by Australia to Manchester for one of five ODIs in 2010.
Old Trafford has been overlooked for Tests for the next three years, and even Cardiff's Swalec Stadium, undergoing a £10m redevelopment, was controversially named ahead of Manchester as an Ashes Test venue.
The five Ashes Test dates were announced last month. Yesterday, the ECB also announced seven ODIs to follow the Test series: two each at Lord's and Trent Bridge and three more at The Oval, the Rose Bowl and the Riverside. The Ashes series follows the World Twenty20, which runs from June 5-21.
