Chinese White Jumps to Head of Oaks Betting
Chinese White's odds for the Oaks have been cut following a comprehensive victory in the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes
There may have been no Oaks clues to emerge from yesterday's 1,000 Guineas but a strong pointer emerged at Gowran Park in Ireland, where the Dermot Weld-trained Chinese White galloped on powerfully to win the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes by four and a half lengths.
This was only a Listed race over an extended nine furlongs but Chinese White moved to the head of the Oaks betting at 5-1 with Ladbrokes. She was cut to 7-1, from 10-1, by the Tote and is set for a step up to Group One company.
"She did it nicely and we'll see how she comes out of that," said Weld. "She's in at Epsom, she's in the Irish Oaks and the Prix de Diane too. The obvious race would be the Irish Oaks, but I wouldn't rule out Epsom.
"She had been slow coming in her coat and was carrying a bit of excess weight but we were happy with that performance in the ground, which was softer than ideal. She'll want good ground but her class won it for her today. She is potentially a very high-class staying filly."
Lush Lashes, sixth behind Natagora in Newmarket's big race, was given a quote of 12-1 for the Oaks by Ladbrokes. Her trainer, Jim Bolger, issued a positive bulletin about Saturday's 2,000 Guineas second, New Approach, and was looking forward to another crack at Henrythenavigator in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on May 24.
"The horse returned home safely and is in very good form. He ate up last night and had a walk around this morning." Bolger also secured third spot in yesterday's 1,000 Guineas with Saoirse Abu. "I am very pleased with her and Lush Lashes. Maybe I ran them over the wrong trip. They just needed a bit more real estate."Ron Cox's tip of the day

The Jubilee Handicap has fallen in stature over the years but still attracts progressive individuals like Nice To Know. Gary Moore's filly went from strength to strength last term, including two turf handicap wins in August. Following a winter break, she returned last month with a career best here when an unlucky second to Cape Hawk. Compensation awaits today, granted a clearer run
