Nelson Piquet and Fernando Alonso sprang a surprise by being second and third fastest in their Renaults ahead of Kazuki Nakajima's Williams and the Ferrari of last year's winner, Felipe Massa.
Max Mosley has had his invitation to visit Israel withdrawn. The minister of sport, Ghaleb Majadle, had asked the FIA president to visit the country and discuss the future of motor sport there. Mosley said yesterday that he would attend the Monaco grand prix next month.
