Bruce Begins to Clear Wigan Decks
Julius Aghahowa and Saloman Olembe are set to leave the JJB this summer for Turkey
Wigan's manager, Steve Bruce, expects the out-of-favor pair of Julius Aghahowa and Salomon Olembe to leave in the summer, probably to join a Turkish club and understood to be to be Kayserispor.
Aghahowa, 26, arrived from Shakhtar Donetsk for £2.1m in January 2007 but the Nigerian international has failed to score in 23 matches. Olembe, a Cameroon midfielder, arrived in September but neither has made a sufficient impression on Bruce since he took over from Chris Hutchings.
"It's fair to say they are on the verge of finalizing moves to Turkey," Bruce said. "Salomon is out of contract soon, so he's going on a free, while there will be a small fee with Julius.
"It hasn't worked out for these two here. It's a shame but that's football. I watch Julius every day on the training ground and that reminds me what a very good finisher he is but in the games it hasn't quite worked out. We will wish both lads well when they go and hope they have a better time in Turkey."
Swansea have been told they will not be presented with the League One trophy on Saturday, pending the result of Leeds' appeal in which they are seeking the 15 points they were deducted at the start of the season. However, the Swans manager, Roberto Martinez, has signed a two-year extension to his deal, which was to expire in 2010. "After a fantastic season that has seen Roberto guide the club into the Championship for the first time in 24 years we have agreed a new, improved contract," said the chairman, Huw Jenkins.
Martinez, who signed a three-year contract when he took over in February 2007, said: "We have come a long way in the last 10 months and we really believe that the next three or four are going to be vital."
