Patrick Becomes First Woman of Indycar

Danica Patrick became the first woman to win a major US open-wheel race by taking the Motegi round of the IRL IndyCar Series in Japan
Danica Patrick yesterday claimed
an historic victory in the Motegi round
of the IRL IndyCar Series in Japan.

The Andretti Green team driver took the lead
with two laps to go to become the first
woman to win a major open-wheel race
in the US series. The 26-year-old American
won by almost six seconds from Helio
Castroneves.

"It's been a long time coming
- finally," Patrick said afterwards. "This is
fabulous. My team called it perfectly for
me. My sex has got nothing to do with it.
I believed in myself as a driver." Michael
Andretti, co-owner of Andretti Green
Racing, said: "I'm thrilled for her that the
monkey is finally off of her back. I think
this is the first of many."
