McAllister Gets New Leeds Deal
Gary McCallister has been rewarded with a one-year rolling contract for steering Leeds towards the League One play-offs
The following apology was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Saturday April 12 2008 The article below wrongly suggested that Leeds United FC has been guilty of abuses of insolvency regulations. This is untrue. We accept that there were no breaches of such regulations in connection with the 15-point deduction that was made at the start of the 2007-08 Football League season. We apologize to Leeds United for any embarrassment caused.
Any lingering doubts that Gary McAllister might not be in charge of Leeds United next season were removed yesterday when Ken Bates offered the former Scotland captain a one-year rolling contract. McAllister, part of the Leeds side that won the title in 1992, returned to Elland Road as manager in January when he succeeded Dennis Wise and initially signed a deal until the end of this season.
Leeds - who have an appeal against the 15-point deduction pending - are on the fringe of the League One promotion race but Bates, the club's chairman, said: "This is for the long-term future of Leeds and is important in terms of our preparations for next season. After the poor start he inherited, we feel Gary has done well. We have been impressed with what he has done here and we decided it was fair to offer him a rolling contract to enable us to plan the future of Leeds United with confidence and security."
"I'm delighted and very honored," said McAllister. "The players now know where they stand as far as I'm concerned and we can all look forward to the future together. I was very eager to stay and I want to bring success to the club."
Celtic have appointed their former captain Neil Lennon to the club's coaching staff. Lennon, 36, left Celtic Park last summer and has had playing spells at Nottingham Forest and Wycombe this season. He returns to Celtic with immediate effect and will be on the bench as a coach for Saturday's Clydesdale Bank Premier League game against Motherwell.
"I am overwhelmed at being offered this chance to return to Celtic," said Lennon, "a place where everyone knows my heart lies."
