Thaxton Fails to Take Title From Romanov
Boxing: Yuri Romanov defended his European lightweight against John Thaxton at the York Hall
The British lightweight champion, Jon Thaxton, failed in his attempt to win the European title at York Hall, Bethnal Green, when he was retired by his corner after five rounds against the champion, Yuri Romanov of Belarus. Thaxton, 33, tried to force the action but was soon in trouble against Romanov's counter-punches and hooks. His nose was soon bleeding and his left cheek grazed but the injury which ended matters - a deep inch-long gash beneath the right eyebrow - opened up in the fourth round and worsened in the fifth to leave his face a mess of blood.
