Toshack Salutes Eastwood After Double Delivers Win for Wales
International round-up
Freddy Eastwood's first goals since August gave Wales a 2-0 victory in a friendly against a Luxembourg side who are ranked 101 places below them but were unusually confident after their first competitive victory in 12 years, last October's 1-0 win in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Belarus.
Good control and a neat finish from the striker, whose last start for Wolves was on Boxing Day, put the visitors in front after 37 minutes and his second, firing in the captain Simon Davies' low cross a minute after the restart, ensured Wales remain undefeated in five games. "Freddy's has not had much action at Wolves," said the manager, John Toshack. "But when he had the chance to pull on the Wales jersey he gave everything."
David Healy was presented with a special award by Uefa's president, Michel Platini, before Northern Ireland's 4-1 win over Georgia to mark his record 13 goals in Euro 2008 qualifying, and it took the striker only 33 minutes to get another, albeit with a deflected shot from 25 yards. By that time the Irish were a goal ahead, Kyle Lafferty scoring after a neat move, and the same player headed the third. Healy scored an own-goal after the interval but Georgia responded in kind in the 87th minute.
Nigeria became the final team to qualify for the Olympics when they beat South Africa 3-0 in Abuja, Everton's Victor Anichebe on as a substitute for his debut and sealing victory for the Under-23 team. Benni McCarthy helped South Africa's senior side beat Paraguay 3-0, the Blackburn striker scoring the second goal in the 47th minute with a header, but his club mate Roque Santa Cruz, the Paraguay striker, was carried off with an ankle injury after a tackle by Aaron Mokoena, another Rovers player.
Belarus, who face England in a World Cup qualifier on October 15, drew 2-2 with Turkey, Middlesbrough's Tuncay Sanli equalizing for the Turks in the first half before Viacheslav Hleb, younger brother of Arsenal's Alexander, gave the home side the lead again only for the Turks to level it with 19 minutes to go. Kazakhstan, due at Wembley four days earlier, lost 1-0 in Armenia, and Andorra, who provide the first opposition of Fabio Capello's qualifying campaign on September 6, lost 3-0 to Latvia. Ukraine, whose Wembley qualifier is in April 2009, won 2-0 against Serbia, Andriy Shevchekno, of Chelsea, and Serhiy Nazarenko getting the goals before the hour.
Denmark drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic, Nicklas Bendtner opening the scoring and Jan Koller equalising before half-time. Israel beat Chile 1-0, Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun getting the goal from a free-kick, Greece proved their win at Euro 2004 was no fluke, again defeating Portugal, this time 2-1 in Düsseldorf, and Spain beat Italy 1-0 in Elche, David Villa getting the winner in the 77th minute. Holland won 4-3 in Austria despite trailing 3-0 after 35 minutes.
A late penalty save by Boro's goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer gave Australia, missing the injured Harry Kewell among others, a 0-0 draw in an Asian Group One World Cup qualifier against China in Kunming and kept them on top of the table.
