Ogilvy Roars Past Tiger for Florida Win
Australian Geoff Ogilvy held his nerve to win the CA Championship in Florida and end Tiger Woods' winning streak
Australian Geoff Ogilvy held his nerve to win the WGC-CA Championship in Doral, Florida, and end Tiger Woods' winning streak.
Ogilvy battled the wet conditions to finish on 17 under par - a shot ahead of South African Retief Goosen, American Jim Furyk and Fiji's Vijay Singh, who all tied in second place at 68 under. Woods, who had won his last seven tournaments worldwide and had not been defeated since September, finished fifth, two shots off Ogilvy.
"I made too many mistakes this week," said Woods. "I had four three-putts this week and I had two terrible lies in bunkers and a photographer got me on nine. With all that, to only finish two back, I think that's a great sign.
"I think the people that truly understand are the players. I don't think you guys really understand or even the fans out there just how small the difference is. If I just cleaned up my round this week then obviously I am right up there with Geoff, if not just a little bit ahead. I had ample chances to get myself up there on that board and win the tournament and I just didn't do it".
The final round - played today after rain delays yesterday - had seemed in peril for Ogilvy, but the Australian saved it with a chip in for par at the 13th hole to secure a final round of one under 71 and claim his second victory in a World Golf Championship event.
With this victory, Ogilvy joins the select group of players to have won more than one WGC title - only Woods and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke could claim such a feat before Ogilvy's remarkable triumph today, which came in a tournament that the world No1 has won six times.
