Lampard and Rooney in Doubt for France
Soccer: Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard may miss England's friendly match with France after they both suffered injuries at the weekend
Fabio Capello's fears that the collision of the Premier League's top four would undermine England's preparations for their friendly against France were realised last night when Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard suffered injuries which may see them miss Wednesday's game in Paris.
Rooney limped out of Manchester United's victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford after sustaining a knock to his knee, the striker undergoing a scan last night, and Lampard played on with a painful hip as Chelsea came from behind to defeat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge.
Capello had already expressed concern that England's prospects should not be jeopardised by such high-profile fixtures before competitive games and, though he will be frustrated at the loss of key personnel, he has received assurances from the Premier League that the fixture list will be kinder ahead of qualifying games.
The Wigan Athletic goalkeeper, Chris Kirkland, has already withdrawn from Capello's second squad after yesterday succumbing to a back injury suffered early in the 3-1 defeat by Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park on Saturday. Capello has called up West Ham's Robert Green as a replacement.
France, too, will be depleted after Arsenal's Bacary Sagna and Gaël Clichy sustained ankle and hamstring problems respectively in the defeat at Chelsea.
England Squad:Goalkeepers: James (Portsmouth), Robinson (Tottenham), Green (West Ham). Defenders: Bridge (Chelsea), A Cole (Chelsea), Wheater (Middlesbrough), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Johnson (Portsmouth), Terry (Chelsea), Brown (Manchester United), Lescott (Everton), Barry (Aston Villa), Upson (West Ham), Woodgate (Tottenham). Midfielders: Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Jenas (Tottenham), Hargreaves (Manchester United), J Cole (Chelsea), Young (Aston Villa), Downing (Middlesbrough), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Bentley (Blackburn). Forwards: Walcott, (Arsenal), Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Owen (Newcastle), Rooney (Manchester United), Crouch (Liverpool), Defoe (Portsmouth).
