Birmingham City Raided By Police

Birmingham City were raided by police in the early hours of this morning. The club have promised to cooperate fully with police, who took away financial documents.

The raid is understood to relate to the Lord Stevens inquiry commissioned by the Premier League's chief executive, Richard Scudamore, which concentrated on illicit payments to players' agents. There is no suggestion that Birmingham have done anything illegal.

"The club is fully cooperating with the police in their inquiries which relate to an unconnected third party or third parties," a statement on the club's website said. "For the avoidance of doubt no one connected with the club has been questioned or arrested."

Scudamore commissioned Stevens to discover bungs in the Premier League. The inquiry failed to produce evidence of irregular payments during its nine-month inquiry, and in January turned to the FA for assistance in forcing eight agents to cooperate with its inquiries into 17 suspicious transfers.
