Given Out for Six More Weeks After Going Ahead With Operation

Football: Newcastle will have to make do without Shay Given for six more weeks after he decided to undergo surgery on a groin injury
Newcastle will have to make do without first-choice goalkeeper Shay Given for a further six weeks after he decided to undergo surgery on his long-standing groin injury.

The Republic of Ireland international, who will be operated on by Dr Ulrike Muschaweck in Germany today, has been troubled by the injury since last year. He has managed only 24 appearances for Newcastle so far this season and has not played for the Magpies since the 5-1 defeat at Manchester United on February 23.

"After consultation with Dr Ulrike Muschaweck, Shay Given will have surgery in Munich today to cure his recurrent groin problems," read a statement on Newcastle's website today. "He is expected to make a full recovery and will be absent for a six-week period."

Hernia specialist Muschaweck has previously operated on Michael Owen and Alan Shearer.
