Greek Cruise Ship Runs Aground With 280 on Board
Rescuers were today preparing to evacuate 280 tourists from a cruise ship after it ran aground off the island of Poros, near Athens, the Greek authorities said.
The vessel was taking on water, and a rescue helicopter and three coastguard boats were heading to the area after the ship was believed to have hit a reef three nautical miles offshore.
"All the passengers are safe, and for the time being are still on the vessel," a Greek marine ministry official told the AFP news agency.
The ministry added that the weather conditions were good and the seas were light. It is not known what caused the accident.
The boat carries passengers on day trips between the city of Piraeus and the nearby islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra.
