Explosion in New York's Times Square

Police have cordoned off a section of Times Square in New York to investigate what witnesses described as a small explosion.

A man and a woman told a local TV station they heard a "huge bang" from their hotel rooms, but there were no police or fire reports of serious damage or injuries.

Cars and police tape are blocking vehicles from entering the area. Members of the police department's bomb squad and firefighters have surrounded a military recruiting station that has a large hole in the front window.

Local television stations said subway trains were being blocked from entering the Times Square subway station. Police cars and yellow tape have blocked entry to the area.

Police could not confirm whether an explosive device went off in the area.

More details soon.
