Leeds Count Cost of Storm
Rugby league: Danny McGuire will be out for up to a month while Clinton Toopi has suffered a dislocated shoulder
Leeds have paid a heavy price for their World Club Challenge victory over Melbourne Storm, losing the stand-off Danny McGuire for up to a month and fearing that the centre Clinton Toopi will be ruled out for the bulk of the season.
McGuire was forced off with a shoulder injury in the first half of last Friday's 11-4 win after a late tackle involving two forwards and although fears of a broken collarbone were unfounded, the coach, Brian McClennan, still expects him to be missing for "around the four-week mark".
McClennan described the dislocated shoulder Toopi suffered on what was his seventh birthday - he was born on February 29 1980 - as "more serious", admitting: "We won't know for sure until he's seen the specialist again but we have got some concerns there."
Leeds will now be able to give an extended run at centre to Ashley Gibson, a 21-year-old who was starting to make his mark last year until he suffered knee ligament damage. Kevin Sinfield is expected to switch from loose forward to replace McGuire in Friday's derby at Castleford, although Jordan Tansey will today be included in the Rhinos' 20-man squad.
Castleford, the only team in the competition without a point after losing their first four matches, have Stuart Donlan, Michael Shenton and Ryan Clayton back in contention. Paul Reilly will appear at tonight's disciplinary hearing on a charge of tripping in the defeat at St Helens.
