Dream
I had a dream that I was walking along a narrow path. I didn’t know where I was. On either side were tall dark trees and the underbrush consisted of thorns and briers and all manner of unpleasant foliage. I couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of me. After that the darkness and the trees blended together to form a hazy curtain. The path was not straight and it was not well traveled. There were potholes and roots all along it. But what stood out the most was the sky. At all times there was a patch of sky visible directly above me. It was a midnight sky. The stars shown brightly and distinct in their lofty homes. There was no moon but the sky seemed bright compared to the darkness around me.
As I walked I would often look up at the sky, longing to be out in the open again. The path continued on, weaving back and forth through the wood.
After a time I noticed that the thorns were starting to brush my arms and legs as I walked. The already narrow path was steadily shrinking. It was then that I started to worry. But having come so far already I knew I must continue.
In this place time was impossible to judge, it seemed as though I walked forever. And then suddenly, there was no path. I looked around but there was no trace that it had ever existed. I was standing on a small patch of open ground. All around were trees and brambles.
I looked up there was nothing there.
I couldn’t tell if the stars had gone out or if the canopy had finally covered my sky. I panicked. I tried to force my way through the thorns but they were too thick. I struggled for what seemed like days. Finally I gave up.
There was no path.
There was no sky.
Bleeding and broken I stopped trying.
And to this day, I am still there. Trapped in the darkness.
No path to follow.
No sky to give me hope.
