NFL Confirm 2008 Wembley Fixture
NFL: New Orleans Saints will play a regular season game against the San Diego Chargers at Wembley in October
The NFL have confirmed another regular season game will be staged at Wembley in October. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that the New Orleans Saints will 'host' the San Diego Chargers on October 26 at the 90,000-capacity London venue. The NFL has chosen to return to the capital for a second regular-season game just one year after the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins faced off at Wembley in 2007.
"We have great expectations for the game and the event," Goodell said. "We think it will be great for the UK fans but also the people of New Orleans and Louisiana, and the people of San Diego and southern California. This is a great opportunity to go on an international platform and promote the things that are happening in their cities."
NFL commissioner Goodell has endorsed a recommendation to play at least one game in the UK in each of the next three years. "Playing a limited number of regular-season games internationally will help build and grow an already passionate international fan base," he said. "The games will strengthen our partnerships with broadcasters and sponsors. The ownership resolution to play regular-season games internationally has evolved to focus on markets, including the UK and Canada, where playing games on a regular basis significantly adds to the broad appeal of our sport."
The announcement was made in Phoenix, Arizona, ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl XLII between the Giants and the New England Patriots. The game between the Giants and the Dolphins last October was an 81,176 sell-out at Wembley.
