Brown is Not in Charge
London 2012: Gordon Brown has been told the Government has no power over Zimbabwe being allowed to compete in the London games
Gordon Brown was warned last night that the Government will be powerless to dictate whether Zimbabwe is allowed to compete at the Olympics in London in 2012 because they do not issue the invitations. The responsibility of whether a country is invited to compete or not in 2012 rests with the International Olympic Committee.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the leading Government agency on the Olympics, admitted last night there was nothing that could be done to prevent Zimbabwe from competing at London in 2012. 'London's host city contract with the International Olympic Committee makes it clear that all National Olympic Committees recognized by the IOC are entitled to participate in the 2012 Games,' said a spokesperson for the DCMS.
