Rovers Rolled Over By Mifsud-inspired Coventry
Coventry City hit four goals past Blackburn Rovers, who join Everton and Birmingham as FA Cup third-round scalps
Coventry City, Oldham and Huddersfield Town pulled off the shocks of the third round as they knocked Premier League sides Blackburn Rovers, Everton and Birmingham City out of the FA Cup, while non-league Havant & Waterlooville are in the draw for the fourth round after holding Swansea to a 1-1 draw.
Michael Mifsud was Coventry City's hero when he scored both goals in the 2-0 Carling Cup third-round win over Manchester United in September and the Malta international confirmed his liking for cup competitions with another brace against Blackburn Rovers. Mifsud scored the opening goal after 33 minutes and the Championship side doubled their advantage when Elliot Ward stepped up to stroke home a penalty after a foul by Zura Khizanishvili. Dele Adebola then raced unchecked through a static Rovers rearguard to make it 3-0 and, although David Bentley grabbed a late consolation goal for the home side, Mifsud made it 4-1 in added time.
They may be a lowly 13th in League One but Oldham knocked high-flying Everton out of the FA Cup thanks to Gary McDonald's looping shot on the stroke of half-time. David Moyes rested a number of Everton's leading players and his team dominated the second half, but despite laying siege to Oldham's goal late on, the League One side go through to the fourth round.
Injury-hit Huddersfield Town took a fourth-minute lead against Birmingham when Luke Beckett was first to the rebound after Maik Taylor parried a shot but Alex McLeish's side looked as though they had done enough to force a replay when Scotland international Garry O'Connor scored after 20 minutes. However, Huddersfield grabbed the winner late on when Chris Brandon scored from close range.
Swansea have profligate finishing to blame for their failure to put non-league Havant & Waterlooville to bed. The hosts hit the woodwork three times before Andy Robinson eventually broke the deadlock. Yet the Blue Square Conference South side are in the hat for the fourth round after Rocky Baptiste leveled the tie three minutes from time in a match that saw the non-league side's Brett Poate and Swansea's Alan Tate sent off.
Tottenham and Reading shared 10 goals when they met in the Premier League last weekend and White Hart Lane witnessed another four goals in an open cup tie. Reading took the lead in bizarre circumstances just before the half-hour mark when Paul Robinson caught Stephen Hunt's long free-kick before stepping back over his goalline to score a freak own goal. But Dimitar Berbatov, who hit four against Steve Coppell's side in the 6-4 league win, scored both sides of half-time, the second a penalty awarded for a foul by Liam Rosenior on Robbie Keane. Hunt then equalized for the Berkshire side with 12 minutes left.
Cambridge United threatened to create the first FA Cup upset of the day when Scott Rendell converted a penalty to put Cambridge 1-0 up against Wolverhampton Wanderers shortly before half-time. However, Michael Kightly scored on 69 minutes and Neill Collins struck two minutes from time to spare Mick McCarthy's men a replay.
Chasetown also took an unexpected lead when Cardiff City 's Kevin McNaughton headed into his own goal early in the first half. However, the non-league side conceded on the stroke of half-time when Peter Whittingham scored and further strikes by Aaron Ramsay, on the hour, and Paul Parry, on 73 minutes, shattered Chasetown's cup dreams.
David Nugent's first goal in three months earned Portsmouth a narrow 1-0 win over Ipswich Town. The England international has struggled to settle since arriving on the south coast but repaid manager Harry Redknapp's faith when he raced on to Sol Campbell's long ball and fired a goal on 51 minutes. Ipswich, defending a 17-match unbeaten record at Portman Road, were aggrieved at Liam Trotter's 24th-minute dismissal but, despite a late rally, they couldn't find an equalizer.
Elsewhere, Sheffield United beat Bolton Wanderers 1-0 thanks to David Carney's winner and Wigan Athletic hammered Sunderland 3-0 thanks to Paul Scharner's 19th-minute opener, Paul McShane's own goal on 56 minutes and David Cotterill's effort 14 minutes from the end. Middlesbrough were 2-1 winners against Bristol City thanks to goals by Stewart Downing and David Wheater.
